A 34-year-old Edinburg woman has been arrested and charged with capital murder after two children were found dead inside a burning vehicle in San Antonio early Friday morning, according to police.

San Antonio Assistant Police Chief Jesus Salame Jr. said during a press conference that officers and firefighters responded to reports of a vehicle fire in the 500 block of Richland Hills Drive between approximately 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., behind a warehouse in the area
When crews extinguished the flames, authorities made the tragic discovery of two deceased children inside the vehicle, believed to be approximately 5 and 7 years old. Officials said a medical examiner is working to confirm the identities of the children.
Police identified the suspect as Marlene Vidal, 34, who was reportedly present at the scene when authorities arrived. She has been taken into custody and is now facing capital murder charges in connection with the deaths.
Investigators said early findings, including surveillance video, physical evidence, and statements provided by Vidal, indicate she is solely responsible for the deaths of the children. Officials also noted that there are early indicators that mental health may have played a role, though the motive remains under investigation.
Authorities are continuing to interview family members and others connected to the case while also working to verify all information gathered so far.
Salame emphasized that investigators are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice for the victims, calling the case a deeply tragic and active investigation.
