ATLANTA — Authorities have identified the victim in Thursday’s deadly stabbing along the Beltline in northeast Atlanta as 23-year-old Alyssa Paige.
According to officials, the incident unfolded after a series of violent acts allegedly carried out by the suspect, beginning with an attack on a postal worker and later escalating to a fatal stabbing along the Beltline trail near Flagler Avenue, next to the Ansley Golf Club.
Investigators say the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Jahmare Brown, was taken into custody later the same day after a large police response in the area. Brown’s initial charges include murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony. He is expected to make his first court appearance on Friday morning.
Authorities also indicated that additional federal charges may be pursued in connection with the earlier alleged attack on an on-duty postal worker, who sustained minor injuries during the incident.
The victim, Alyssa Paige, was initially transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to her injuries. The postal worker involved in the earlier attack is expected to recover.
Police said Brown has a prior arrest history, including battery and other offenses such as disorderly conduct, obstruction of law enforcement, shoplifting, and providing false information to officers in previous incidents.
During the search for the suspect, Atlanta Police released images showing him on a bicycle along the Beltline. Officers later spotted and identified him while patrolling near Peachtree Street and moved in, taking him into custody without incident.
Officials praised the swift response of law enforcement and assured the public that the area was secured following the incident. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a press briefing that residents should feel safe, noting that the suspect was quickly apprehended and that a full investigation is underway.
