The night was supposed to be ordinary — just another weekend of music, laughter, and young people moving from one party to the next. But in Amarillo, Texas, that routine ended in sudden, terrifying violence that has left families grieving and a community struggling to make sense of what happened.
Seventeen-year-old Ezekiel Rudy Almazan was identified as one of two people killed in a shooting early Saturday morning at the Westminster Apartments. Those who knew him say he carried a kind of warmth that made people feel safe — a presence that could brighten a room without even trying. Now, that light is gone, replaced by heartbreak and questions no one can answer.
Police say the shooting happened around 1:58 a.m. at the apartment complex on Coulter Street. What began as a gathering of teens and young adults turned chaotic when another group arrived unexpectedly. Investigators believe some of those individuals had already been asked to leave a separate party earlier in the night — and instead of going home, they followed the crowd to the apartments.
At some point, authorities say the group attempted to force their way into one of the units. The situation escalated quickly. Before anyone had time to process what was happening, gunfire erupted. Investigators confirmed a rifle-style weapon was used, and the sound of shots ripped through the early morning silence, sending partygoers running in panic.
When the gunfire stopped, the damage was irreversible.
Two people were dead. One victim died at the scene. Ezekiel Almazan was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Between eight and ten others were wounded, leaving behind not just grief, but a wide trail of trauma that extended far beyond that apartment complex.
The identity of the second victim has not yet been released, as officials continue efforts to notify family members.
As detectives work to determine exactly what led to the shooting — and who pulled the trigger — Ezekiel’s loved ones are left holding onto memories of the boy they lost. A fundraising page created to support his mother describes him as “so full of life, love, and light.” Those words now stand as a painful tribute to a life stolen far too soon.
