The Conroe community is mourning with deep sorrow and love following the tragic loss of 53-year-old Adelaida Gomez, who was killed in a devastating wrong-way crash early Saturday morning on U.S. 77.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred around 5:07 a.m. on U.S. 77 south of Orphanage Road. Investigators say a vehicle was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it struck a silver Honda Accord head-on in a violent collision.
Authorities report that 22-year-old Joey Gael Estrada of Austin was driving a green Chevrolet Camaro in the wrong direction at the time of the crash. Gomez was a passenger in the Honda along with another woman.
DPS confirmed that Adelaida Gomez was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the impact. The second occupant of the Honda survived and was also injured.
Estrada was transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Following treatment, he was arrested and booked into the Cameron County Jail, facing charges of criminally negligent homicide and possession of a controlled substance.
