The Bartlett, Illinois community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Mike Basich, a beloved teacher and longtime member of School District U-46 whose death has left an immeasurable void in the lives of students, colleagues, friends, and family.
Mike Basich dedicated nearly three decades of his life to education and to the students of District U-46. Over his 28-year career, he became widely respected not only for his knowledge and professionalism, but also for the compassion and encouragement he showed to everyone around him. He most recently served as an AP Humanities teacher at Bartlett High School, where he inspired countless students through his passion for literature, writing, and learning.
A graduate of Elgin High School, Mike returned to the same district that shaped him as a young student. He often spoke about how much it meant to work in the community where he had grown up and attended school. Before teaching at Bartlett High School, he attended Wayne Elementary and Canton Middle School, experiences that helped form the educator he would later become.
Throughout his years in the classroom, Mike was admired for his ability to connect with students. He believed every student had the ability to succeed and often encouraged others to replace judgment with curiosity. That philosophy guided the way he taught and mentored young people. His classroom was more than a place to learn—it was a place where students felt supported, challenged, and respected.
Friends and coworkers remember Mike as a thoughtful, intelligent, and deeply caring individual. He had a gift for making others feel seen and valued. Whether he was helping a student through a difficult time, sharing advice with a fellow teacher, or encouraging someone to believe in themselves, Mike always led with kindness.
