ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Claflin University is mourning the loss of a longtime and beloved staff member who was remembered as both a dedicated colleague and a mentor to countless students.

The university announced Sunday that Shirley Anne Hugee, a 1970 Claflin graduate and the coordinator for academic student support with Upward Bound, passed away Saturday at MUSC Health Orangeburg.

Hugee was known across campus for her unwavering commitment to student success and her caring spirit, leaving a lasting impact on the Claflin community through years of service and guidance.

In a statement shared on social media, Claflin University President Dwaun J. Warmack expressed heartfelt condolences, calling Hugee’s death a major loss for the university.

“Ms. Hugee’s dear presence will be greatly missed,” Warmack said. “Please keep her family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

University officials also announced that grief counseling resources will be available for students, faculty, and staff through TimelyCare throughout the upcoming week.

At this time, no additional details have been released regarding memorial service arrangements.
