MCDUFFIE COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities have identified a man who was killed in an early morning hit-and-run along Augusta Highway, leaving a community in shock and a family devastated.

Coroner Paul Johnson confirmed the victim as 53-year-old Tony Fulwood Sr., of Dearing, Georgia. Officials say Fulwood was struck in the 3100 block of Augusta Highway under circumstances that remain under investigation.

According to authorities, 911 received a call at approximately 4:40 a.m. Sunday reporting a body lying on the side of the road. Emergency personnel responded to the scene, where Fulwood was pronounced dead at 5:11 a.m.

Investigators have not yet released details on the vehicle or driver involved in the hit-and-run. The Georgia State Patrol, along with the McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office, is actively working to determine what led up to the fatal incident and to locate the responsible party.

An autopsy has been scheduled for later this week as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials have not yet released additional details regarding possible witnesses or surveillance in the area.
