The Lenoir community is in mourning following the tragic loss of Roy James Byrd, 39, who passed away in a devastating single-vehicle crash late Friday night, April 24, 2026, on Connelly Springs Road near Baton Church Road in Caldwell County.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to the scene at approximately 11:49 p.m. after reports of a serious crash. Investigators determined that a 2013 Ford Taurus was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when it crossed the centerline, left the roadway, and struck a tree.
Despite emergency response efforts, Roy James Byrd was pronounced deceased at the scene as a result of his injuries.
