OWENSBORO, Ky. — Authorities have identified the man killed in a Friday evening shooting in Owensboro, and police say a juvenile initially taken into custody has since been released due to the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Daviess County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Christopher Ray, 30.
According to the Owensboro Police Department, officers responded shortly after 7 p.m. on April 3 to the 3000 block of Daviess Street following reports of a shooting. Ray was transported to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
In an update released April 6, investigators stated that Ray was allegedly physically assaulting an adult female inside the home when the shooting occurred. Police said the woman’s juvenile son, fearing for his mother’s life, retrieved a firearm from inside the residence and shot Ray in defense of his mother.
The juvenile male was initially taken into custody following the incident. However, after consultation with the Daviess County Attorney and the Commonwealth’s Attorney, officials determined the juvenile would be released to his mother while authorities conduct a full review of the evidence.
The case remains under investigation.
