The Northern Kentucky law enforcement community is mourning the death of Dustin Zink, a 37-year-old off-duty officer with the Florence Police Department, who was fatally shot following an armed standoff with deputies in Boone County on the night of Thursday, July 3.

According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a residence on Lely Court in the Oakbrook neighborhood after receiving reports of an armed individual who was allegedly threatening both himself and others. Authorities later identified the individual as Officer Dustin Zink, who was off duty at the time of the incident.
Investigators said deputies attempted to peacefully resolve the situation through negotiations after arriving at the scene. Officials reported that Zink was armed and allegedly making threats of self-harm as well as threats toward others, prompting an extended standoff as law enforcement worked to bring the situation to a safe conclusion.
According to the Kentucky State Police, efforts to de-escalate the encounter were ultimately unsuccessful. Investigators stated that Zink fired his weapon multiple times during the confrontation. In response, four Boone County Sheriff’s Office deputies discharged their department-issued firearms, striking him.
Emergency medical personnel transported Zink to a nearby hospital, where lifesaving efforts were undertaken. Despite those efforts, the Boone County Coroner’s Office confirmed that he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:40 p.m.
The four deputies involved in the shooting have been identified as participants in the incident, and the Kentucky State Police have assumed responsibility for the investigation, as is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings throughout the state. Detectives are continuing to gather evidence, review body camera footage, interview witnesses, and establish a complete timeline of the events that led to the fatal encounter.
Authorities have not released additional information regarding the circumstances that preceded the initial emergency call, nor have they indicated whether anyone else was injured during the incident.
The death of Officer Dustin Zink has deeply affected members of the Florence Police Department, fellow law enforcement officers, and the broader Northern Kentucky community. As the investigation continues, many are reflecting on the complexities surrounding mental health crises and the challenges faced by first responders both on and off duty.
The Florence Police Department and the Boone County Sheriff’s Office have not released additional public statements regarding funeral arrangements or memorial services. Further information is expected as the investigation progresses and officials provide updates.
The Kentucky State Police continue to lead the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, and additional details will be released as they become available.
