The community of Bethlehem and surrounding areas is grappling with the tragic death of Andrew W. Krasnansky, a 37-year-old resident of Lower Saucon Township, following a tense and prolonged standoff with law enforcement.
The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office officially identified Krasnansky after the incident, confirming that he was pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m. on March 25 at St. Luke’s University Hospital.
According to authorities, Krasnansky died from gunshot wounds, though the exact circumstances surrounding his death are still under active investigation. Coroner Daniel A. Buglio stated that while the cause of death has been determined, the manner of death remains pending as officials continue to review all aspects of the case.
The situation began earlier that morning, around 10:30 a.m., at Krasnansky’s residence located in the 2400 block of Applebutter Road in Lower Saucon Township.
Reports from emergency dispatch indicated that Krasnansky had barricaded himself inside the home, prompting a significant law enforcement response. Officers from multiple agencies, including the Pennsylvania State Police, arrived at the scene to contain the situation and attempt a peaceful resolution.
Specialized units, including the Pennsylvania State Police’s Special Emergency Response Team (SERT), were deployed due to the high-risk nature of the standoff.
Armored vehicles, crisis negotiators, and numerous emergency responders surrounded the residence as officials worked to persuade Krasnansky to surrender safely. The standoff lasted for several hours, during which tension remained high and nearby residents were urged to stay clear of the area.
During the incident, Trooper Nathan Branosky reported that Krasnansky discharged a firearm at one point, prompting a Lower Saucon police officer to return fire.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported during that initial exchange. However, as the situation escalated later in the day, a member of the SERT unit ultimately fired the shot that resulted in Krasnansky’s death.
Authorities have emphasized that the investigation into the incident is ongoing. The case is being jointly reviewed by the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office and the Pennsylvania State Police Troop M Major Case Team.
Additionally, Stephen Baratta confirmed that his office is overseeing the legal aspects of the investigation and that no further details will be released until the review is complete.
