According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers were called to Lizzie Road near Iona Church Road, just west of Fairmont, following reports of a serious rollover crash. Investigators said a 2013 Kia was traveling westbound when, for reasons still under investigation, it veered off the roadway, struck a ditch, and violently overturned multiple times.

The vehicle eventually came to rest upside down in a nearby field, leaving behind a scene described by responders as chaotic and deeply distressing.

Authorities confirmed that Pittman, who was riding in the front passenger seat, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. During the violent rollover, she was partially ejected through the vehicle’s sunroof. Despite rapid response from emergency crews, Robeson County EMS pronounced her dead at the scene. Her body was later transported to UNC Health Southeastern.

The driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to McLeod Regional Medical Center for urgent treatment. Officials have not released the driver’s identity as the investigation continues.

Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol say the cause of the crash remains under active investigation, and charges may be pending depending on the outcome of their findings.

The sudden loss of Ta’nyah Pittman has left her school and community in mourning, remembering a young life full of promise that ended far too soon in a moment of unimaginable tragedy.
