A graduation celebration turned tragic Wednesday afternoon after 24-year-old Jayden Baretta of Columbus, Georgia, died following an incident at Chimney Rock on Lake Martin, according to local authorities.

Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said deputies received a 911 call at approximately 1:30 p.m. reporting that a young man had jumped from the rocks into the water and failed to resurface. The incident occurred along the Tallapoosa River near the popular Chimney Rock area, where dozens of people had gathered.
Authorities confirmed that Baretta was visiting the area with a large group of friends from Columbus to celebrate a graduation milestone. Witnesses at the scene reported that he jumped from the bluff into the water but did not come back up, prompting immediate concern among those present.
Emergency responders, including divers from the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery Fire and Rescue, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Marine Patrol, responded swiftly and initiated a coordinated search effort. Officials temporarily restricted boat traffic in the area to allow rescue teams to safely operate in the water.
After several hours of searching, divers located Baretta’s body approximately 50 feet below the surface on a submerged rock shelf. Sheriff Franklin noted that the area presents significant hazards, with steep underwater drop-offs reaching depths of up to 120 feet, making conditions particularly dangerous.
The recovery marked the conclusion of the search operation, though the incident remains under review by local authorities. At this time, no foul play is suspected, and the death appears to be accidental.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through both the local Lake Martin community and Baretta’s hometown of Columbus, where friends and loved ones have begun sharing tributes in his memory. Many described him as a vibrant and outgoing individual whose presence brought energy and positivity to those around him.
Officials are using the incident to remind the public of the risks associated with cliff jumping and swimming in unfamiliar or deep-water areas, particularly where underwater terrain may not be visible.
No additional details regarding funeral arrangements have been released. Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
